Since opening in 1990, For Pet’s Sake has been the only veterinary hospital in Georgia that is devoted solely to pet birds and other exotic animal species. Our hospital does not treat dogs or cats. We provide routine preventative care as well as medical and surgical treatments for birds, rabbits, ferrets, snakes, lizards, turtles, guinea pigs, and other small mammals everyday. Equally important is the information our doctors and staff provide on care and special needs of these unique pets.
Our hospital owner, Dr. Mimi Shepherd, is the only member of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in the Atlanta area certified in avian medicine. Both she and Dr. Jason Hutcheson hold memberships in professional associations dedicated to exotic animal species. These associations include: Association of Avian Veterinarians, Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians, and the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians. In addition, they attend over twenty hours of exotic animal continuing education each year.
Mimi Shepherd, associate veterinarian, graduated from Florida State University in 1975 earning a BS in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics. After working at the Food and Drug Administration for a few years, she attended the University of Georgia; earning a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1985. In 1999, she obtained Diplomate status of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners; certified in avian medicine. Dr Shepherd lives with a flock of small birds, three dogs, and one tortoise.
Jason Hutcheson, hospital owner, earned a BS in Biology from Georgia Southern University in 1994. He then obtained his doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georiga in 1998. He worked at For Pet's Sake while attending vet school and joined the veterinary staff in 2001. He lives with four dogs, two birds, and too many snakes to count.
